In Merseburg, sections of the tramway run on a precast track slab system that has aged over time. Along a 1,000-meter route, around 300 m² of track slabs developed voids beneath them, leading to deteriorated support conditions.
A complete replacement of the concrete slabs would have been technically feasible, but costly and only possible with major disruptions to both tram operations and road traffic.
Following positive trial results in 2023, the affected section in Weißenfelser Straße was stabilized this year by injecting silicate resin into the voids – all while tram service continued without interruption. This measure restored the bearing capacity, extended the service life of the existing structure by many years, and postponed the need for more extensive and expensive interventions.
